Is ‘development’ a bane?

We are in the midst of nature’s greatest fury. We are witnessing floods, earthquakes and storms in greater numbers than ever in the past century. Are we humans to blame? Have we depleted the world for our pleasure? These questions are being scrutinized and studied by several scientists worldwide. The recent upheaval on Global Warming by planet healers like Al Gore, Wangari Maathai and others has made us realize that we are the cause of our own destruction.

Can trees be our saviour?

Trees have a clever biochemical process called photosynthesis that enables them to take in carbon dioxide through their leaves, and swap that nasty gas for oxygen. They use the carbon to make molecules like cellulose, and thus more trees providing us with cleaner air.

Is it possible to lower the global warming rate by stopping Deforestation?

Of course!!

Forests composed of growing trees, absorb carbon dioxide and act as a sink. They are generally green and bristly and remain quite a dark shade even after a blizzard absorbing more of the sun's heat than vegetation, which might otherwise cover the same stretch of land.

Dr Jannie Tay is fighting Global Warming through Sustainable Reforestation. She hopes that this would motivate others to join her and restore trees for our grandchildren and the generations thereafter.

So how much of a change is Reforestation likely to cause?

Scientist predict that reducing deforestation is “among the least-expensive mitigation options available" to cut emissions.

Reforestation assists in reducing the rate at which atmospheric carbon dioxide increases. Benefits such as increased water availability, reduced energy demands, and greater ecosystem productivity can also occur in specific regions over the short or long-term.
